About the Hotel
Rooms with literary flair
Hotel Wedina An Der Alster offers 57 rooms across four color-coded buildings, each themed around literature and architecture. Options range from compact budget rooms (starting at 9 sqm) to spacious apartments (up to 40 sqm). Many feature garden views through floor-to-ceiling windows, private balconies, or direct garden access. The Blue House contains 14 author-inspired rooms with exposed concrete and modern design, while the Harry Rowohlt room (33 sqm) includes event space with daylight and garden access. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, parquet floors, and free Wi-Fi; apartments add kitchenettes (€35/stay).
Books and breakfast
ZeitBar in the Red House serves a breakfast buffet (€19.50) with regional products, homemade bread, and lactose-free/vegan options from 6:30-11:00 AM. The same space transforms into a bar from noon-10:00 PM, offering small homemade dishes and drinks. Over 300 autographed books by authors like Henning Mankell fill the in-house library, borrowable from reception. A painting/reading corner in the Red House caters to children.
Garden and events
Behind the Red House, a quiet garden with seating is open 8:00 AM-10:00 PM. Three flexible event spaces (19-112 sqm) host readings, meetings, or weddings, some with garden access. The hotel partners with Hamburg's Literaturhaus and Elbphilharmonie, offering cultural event tickets. Weekly activities include author readings in the library.
St. Georg hub
Located in Hamburg's St. Georg district, the hotel is a 10-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof (central station) and 1.5 km from landmarks like the Kunsthalle museum and Speicherstadt warehouses. The area is known for design shops, cafes like The Coffee Bean, and LGBTQ+ venues. Parking costs €19.50/day in the garage or backyard.

Guest Ratings & Reviews
The hotel has a pleasant bustle and lots of light in its large and informal rooms, but it may feel a bit cramped. The location is excellent, next to the Alster, and the dining experience offers delicious pastries and breads. The friendly service is a highlight, but some areas may lack attention to detail.
Staying at the Wedina in the Yellow house was a pleasant experience. The rooms, located on the first floor overlooking the main road, were comfortable and nicely furnished, including a balcony facing an inner garden. The service, while friendly and helpful during the day, felt a bit understaffed at night and lacked necessary tools. The location was perfect, just a short walk away from the Alster, Kunsthalle Hamburg, and central station, offering easy access to various attractions. The dining experience provided a delightful euro-breakfast with a diverse selection. Overall, a convenient place to stay with some minor service lapses.
I was delighted with my stay at this hotel. The location was convenient, close to beautiful Ausenalster lake, and within walking distance to the downtown area. The service was exceptional, with friendly and helpful staff always ready to assist. The dining experience was incredibly delicious with a wide variety of choices available. However, the room size was quite small, but the soundproofing was effective. The hotel offers great value for money overall.
